Notice anything weird in this photo? What about the showerhead hanging above the toilet? That's right, get used to showering in the middle of your bathroom. The water goes into a drain in the corner. You wear plastic shower shoes whenever you enter the bathroom. It really didn't take long to get used to.

Two Korean guys dancing cheek to cheek at a German theme bar we went to. I found it quite amusing. The music was horrible. The house beer was just as bad. It tasted like i remember Bud tasting the only time i ever tried it. It was like drinking dishwater. Not that i've ever drank dishwater. It could have used a little thing i like to call "taste". I hope i can find Canadian beer somewhere. Some good Canadian beef would be nice too.

This is how Koreans move into apartment buildings. Someone was moving in a few floors above us when we snapped this. You can't really see it, but the platform is on the back of a small truck. They extend the back up to reach the balcony of the apartment they need to get to. I think it's a faster and smarter way then we do it in north America.

This is the Readingtown staff, minus me taking the picture, out for supper. In Korea you sit on the floor for your meals. At this restaurant the food is cooked in the middle of the table right in front of you. We had beef that night and it was pretty good. It wasn't as lean as at home. Eating with chopsticks wasn't as bad as i had thought, but i'm far from a master. I did manage to eat this whole meal with chopsticks without any major mishaps. Not bad for the second try.

Looking east (i think) down the street outside our apartment complex. This street seems pretty busy at all hours. The city seems to be about the size of Moose Jaw to me, but they've crammed over 260,000 people into it. There are apartments complexes and taxis everywhere. We can easily walk to both the old and new downtowns in about 10 minutes. It seems like there's three corner stores on every block and just as many restaurants. There are plenty of pizza and fried chicken places.

I Smell a Rat...

Can't sleep again. Surprise, surprise. You'd think after two consecutive nights with a total of nine hours sleep, i would be a little tired. Still sick too. Might as well write a bit.

On Tuesday i was in the bedroom, when from the kitchen i hear a blood curdling scream and a big thud. I rush out into the kitchen and my girlfriend (C) is almost in tears. When i ask her what happened she tells me she saw a huge mouse run right in front of her and into the floor of the porch where the washing machine is. She shows me with her fingers how big she thought it was and it must have been about five inches. The big thud i heard was her slamming the sliding door to the porch. I'm surprised the thing didn't shatter. She was so upset i thought we'd be on a plane back to Canada that night. We had mouse in our second floor apartment last year and we almost moved out of there right away. I managed to catch and kill that one. Made me feel like a big man. Almost like an adult. That one was probably only two and a half inches without the tail. I didn't believe the size of the thing she said she saw.

Fast forward to Wednesday and i'm going to get some laundry from the porch. I close the door behind me and stay still a couple of seconds. From behind the washing machine a beast that may have been a small cat scurries from its hiding spot. She was right. The thing must have been about five inches. We told the director of our school we saw it again and he went over to the apartment while we were teaching to lay traps and poison. I checked this morning and no carcass yet. I think C will feel better when we find a body. When we do i'll post some pictures of the monster. Well, i guess it looks like i'm on laundry duty for the next year.

We're Not in Saskatchewan Anymore...

Today has been a long day. Teaching Korean kids English has to be a form of birth control. I wasn't able to control most of the classes today. Being sick hasn't helped things, as i only have about half my voice. I guess my voice is better than it was yesterday. I'm not used to trying to talk over five classes of 8-12 six or seven year old kids. I think i'm going to have to start laying the smack down a bit. The teacher before me gave them a little too much freedom to run wild. I won't write much more now as it is kind of late and i was up until five last night. I'll write more about our first three weeks in Korea in a couple of days and post a few pictures.
